Team Leader Bio:
During his clinical training in the Department of Cardiology/ Hypertensiology with Dr. Friedrich C. Luft and Dr. Jens Jordan (Charité – University School of Medicine Berlin) Dr. Birkenfeld used an integrative physiology approach to study autonomic cardiovascular control as well as autonomic control of energy metabolism and body weight regulation in basic science as well as clinical research. Then, he joined the Department of Endocrinology, and Cellular and Molecular Physiology of Dr. Gerald I. Shulman, at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he developed a mouse model to study longevity and the related components of energy metabolism and autonomic control. He is currently holding a position as a Professor of Metabolic and Vascular Medicine and direct a basic science research group, which studies the INDY KO mice as well as Clinical Research Center at the Charité – University School of Medicine Berlin and the Technical University Dresden.
